Polly Track

RoadDirtRoadbook

Dirt by difficulty, rally roadbook, closed roads. Compare it with the motorcycle apps you know.

Polly Track picks dirt roads by how hard they can get, builds a rally roadbook from your route, marks roads closed to motorcycles with the reason and reroutes on the phone, even where there is no signal. Below, feature by feature, you can see what it does and what Calimoto, Kurviger, OsmAnd, DMD2 and Komoot do.

Getting started

From the home screen, in one tap.

Below the map there is "Where shall we ride?": type a destination, or pick one of the options below. The ☰ menu at the top opens My tracks, Offline maps, Settings and recording a free ride.

Ride somewhereA to B, with stops

Up to three routes to compare, with distance on dirt and climb.

Loopby time or distance

Start and finish in the same place, on different roads where possible.

Discover an area"I have 3 hours"

A quick ride out, a loop on the area's dirt roads and back, within the hours you have.

Nearbyin riding minutes

Castles, villages, viewpoints and passes, with a photo when there is one.

Trip1 to 3 days

Daily stages, with nights where there is somewhere to stay.

Plan

Choose the surface, compare routes.

Pick Road, Mixed or Offroad and how hard the dirt can be: Easy, Medium or Hard. The app suggests up to three routes and shows time, distance, distance on dirt, climb and elevation profile for each. In the coloured strip, brown is dirt.

  • Dirt with no surface details is marked as "uncertain".
  • Road only? The "Scenic" option looks for bends, passes and viewpoints; you can avoid motorways.
  • With a bike and rider profile (for example "Maxi adventure"), surface and difficulty are set for you.
  • Place search works with no signal.
Routes to Varese Ligure, Offroad · dirt medium · no motorways: "Dirt" recommended, 1 hr 25, 64 km, 9.3 km of dirt, 1,673 m of climb; "Balanced" 1 hr 09; "Fastest" 48 min with no dirt; below, the surface strip and the elevation profile.

Navigating in town: roundabout, exit 2 in 990 m on Piazzale Monte Grappa, 28 km/h with a 30 limit, elevation profile with 1,667 m to climb, the next three turns and 64 km to go, arriving at 11:00.
Navigating by day.

Navigate

Big arrow, voice and rerouting.

Tap "Ride". At the top you see the next turn and how far it is, below it the following three and the distance to go. The voice announces turns in English or Italian. If you miss a turn, the route is recalculated on the phone.

  • Large text and buttons, made for a handlebar mount and gloves.
  • Speed and the road's limit when known; fixed speed cameras flagged 1,500 m ahead.
  • Keeps guiding with the phone locked; dark colours at night.

Weather

Rain on the route's profile.

Once the route is ready, Polly asks MET Norway for the forecast at a few points along it, for the time you will pass each one. The elevation profile shows where rain is expected; below it, one line sums up the sections, for example "Light rain from km 40 to 64, around 10:44", with the age of the forecast.

  • On dirt it estimates the risk of mud from the expected rain and the rain of the last few hours.
  • With no signal you see the last forecast downloaded, with its age. The route is calculated anyway.
  • Only the area, rounded to about 1 km, is sent. Turn it off in Settings › Default route.
Route summary to Varese Ligure: on the elevation profile the rainy stretch is hatched and marked with a cloud; below, the box "Light rain from km 40 to 64, around 10:44 · 12 °C" and "Weather data: MET Norway".

Safety

SOS by SMS, with your recent track.

In Settings › Safety you add up to three contacts. While navigating or recording, "SOS" prepares a text message with your position, heading and up to six points of the road you have just ridden. You have 5 seconds to cancel; then the phone's messaging app opens and you press Send.

  • It needs SMS coverage, not internet. Polly sends nothing on its own and does not call emergency services: "Call 112" only opens the phone dialler.
  • Crash detection (trial): off by default. If you turn it on, after a hard impact, a sudden stop and 30 seconds almost still, an alarm sounds with "I'M OK"; if nobody answers within 60 seconds the SOS opens, and you still press Send.

Rally roadbook

A roadbook built from your route.

While navigating, open the ☰ menu and tap "Rally roadbook". Each box is a junction: total and partial distance, a drawing of the junction (tulip) with the real side roads, the exit heading in degrees (CAP), the surface, steep climbs marked ! !! !!!, and symbols for villages, fuel and gates. At the top is the trip meter, which you correct by ±10 or ±100 metres.

On a tablet the roadbook sits to the right of the map.
Rally roadbook on a phone: total and partial trip, boxes at 0.95, 2.21, 6.28 and 8.10 km with tulips, headings, surface, village symbol and steep sections.
On a phone, full screen.
Settings › Remote control: previous and next box, trip ±10 and ±100 m, reset partial and MARK, each with its assigned key (arrows, volume, page up and down, Play/Pause, Enter, Space).
Settings › Remote control (Italian interface).
  • Handlebar remote. A Bluetooth remote that works as a keyboard scrolls the boxes and corrects the trip meter. In Settings › Remote control, press the key you want for each action. On Android the volume keys work too.
  • Training. On a tablet, "Hide map" leaves only the roadbook, to learn navigating like in a rally.
  • Printable PDF. In "My tracks" tap ⋮ › "Export roadbook PDF": 145 or 150 mm roll, A4 or A5.
  • Editor and field survey. With "Edit roadbook" you fix tulips, notes, symbols and photos. While riding, "MARK" saves a danger, a ford or a gate; at the end of the ride the marks become boxes. Export to GPX and OpenRally too.

Symbols and marks are drawn for Polly Track with the usual roadbook meaning; they are not the official FIM set.

Closures

You see closed roads, and who closed them.

Sections closed to motor vehicles are magenta on the map and counted in each route's summary. While navigating, an alert comes 300 metres before (you can choose 150 or 500). Press and hold a road to see its surface, difficulty and the reason for the closure: forestry road, footpath, seasonal ban, protected area. When the source gives them, you also see the authority, the act (an ordinance, for example) and how long it applies.

The map also shows protected areas and Natura 2000 sites (the EU network of protected areas), from official ISPRA and European Environment Agency data.

The data comes from OpenStreetMap and may be incomplete: the sign on the ground always wins, and the rider decides.

Maps

Download only the regions you need.

On first launch the app suggests the region you are in. Each region is about 130 MB (Molise) to 940 MB (Lombardy). Once downloaded, the map, search and routing work with no signal, and routes cross every region you have downloaded.

  • Topo map with contour lines, hillshade, tracks coloured by difficulty, protected areas, passes, fords, barriers, springs and huts; you can turn it off.
  • Viewpoints, passes, huts, water and fuel you can show or hide.

Record

Record your ride and look back at it.

From the ☰ menu tap "Record a free ride", or record while navigating. At the end, the report shows distance, moving time, averages, climb and how much dirt; on the map you can colour the track by speed, lean, braking and throttle. Lean and braking are estimated with the phone's sensors on the mount.

  • Open a GPX or KML from "Share" and follow it, even in reverse.
  • Export your rides as GPX or CSV from "My tracks".
  • "My roads" colours the roads you have already ridden; loops and "Discover an area" can prefer new ones.

Tablets and iPad

On a tablet, map and data side by side.

On Android tablets and iPad, next to the map there is a panel with the route's elevation profile coloured by surface, your real altitude over the estimate, the climb left and the gradient of the next 500 metres. Switch to "Ride" and speed and altitude are drawn as you go.

Tablet navigation with the Route chart: profile coloured by surface, elevation 767 m, 2,031 m left to climb, gradient of the next 500 m −3%.
"Route": the ride's profile and where you are.
Tablet navigation with the Ride chart: speed during the ride, average 43 and max 58 km/h.
"Ride": live speed and altitude.
Polly Track on Android Auto: offline map with the orange route, next turn in 115 m, arrival in 2 hr 32 min at 9:11 PM, 88.8 km.

In the car and on your wrist

Android Auto and Apple Watch.

Android Auto: start navigation on the phone and turn-by-turn appears on the car's screen, with the turn, distance and arrival. If you end it from the car, it ends on the phone too.

Apple Watch: install it from the iPhone's Watch app; it shows the next turn, taps at 200 and 50 metres and tells you whether you are recording (watch screens are in Italian for now).

More screens

No signal, no data collection

Works with no signal. Your data stays on your phone.

No signal needed

Once the region is downloaded, search, routing, rerouting and guidance run on the phone, even where there is no coverage.

Privacy

Tracks, rides, SOS contacts and telemetry never leave your phone. The app collects no data and shows no ads. Weather, if you leave it on, sends MET Norway only the area, rounded to about 1 km.
