Closed roads and protected areas
Roads closed to motor vehicles are magenta on the map. Press and hold to read why they are closed. The app warns you before you ride in, then it is your call.
What it does
A restricted section is dashed magenta, on the map and on the route. Polly does not remove it from the map. It makes it much more expensive, so the route avoids it when it can. If a route still contains some, the summary tells you how many km.

- View the road: press and hold a road to read its name, type, surface, difficulty, steepest gradient and, if it is closed, the reason. Agricultural-forestry road, forest road, farm road, private, permit only, closed to everyone, hiking path, protected area.
- Ban or permit: a closed section and one marked "Permit required" have different wording. When the source gives them, you also read the authority, the type, number and date of the act (an ordinance, a decree) and how long it is valid.
- Protected areas and Natura 2000: the map shows protected areas from the official Italian EUAP list (ISPRA) and Natura 2000 sites from the European Environment Agency, with name, code and type (SCI, SAC or SPA).
- Seasonal closures: passes and roads closed only in some months stay in the route. Polly checks the period against your ride date and, if they are closed that day, tells you in the summary and while riding. They are not magenta, so you do not mistake them for a permanent ban.
When it helps
Off-road, when a track on the map looks fine and then you find a barrier and a sign. With Polly you know before, at home while you plan or on the bike, 300 metres before you get there.
It also helps on Alpine passes in autumn and spring. If the pass is closed on the day of your ride, you read it before you leave.
How to use it
On the map: press and hold a road › "View the road". Warning distance: Settings › Navigation, 150, 300 or 500 m.
- Plan a route. The summary shows the restricted km, if any.
- Tap the magenta section, or press and hold a road, to read the reason.
- While navigating the warning comes 300 metres before (or 150 or 500), and at least 20 seconds before at speed. Inside the section you read that you are in a restricted section and how much is left.
- While riding, View the road only opens below 5 km/h.
Good to know
- Restrictions come from OpenStreetMap and, in some regions, from official lists: agricultural-forestry roads in Lombardy, forest roads in Trento and Veneto, forest roads in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, hiking networks in Emilia-Romagna and Liguria. These sources never close public paved roads.
- The data can be incomplete or old. The sign on site always wins, and the rider decides.
- When routing, permit-only sections count as closed. Polly cannot know whether you have the permit.
- A protected area does not always mean a ban. The rules depend on the park. Area data under the CC BY 4.0 licence.
- If the period of a seasonal closure is unclear, you still get a warning asking you to check the signs.
